Roleplayer's Off Topic Thread #38

Recommended Posts

Cain talks in another video about how the Vault Dweller being sent out because they drew the shortest straw was very deliberately done so that the player can justify making any sort of character, which he values highly in an RPG. You can’t make a stupid character and then ask "why did they send the idiot?" because it could’ve been anyone.

He also mentions they probably sent out lots of vault dwellers. Probably sent our character out, gave it a couple weeks, and then sent another, rinse and repeat for a while until our character actually succeeds and makes it back with the water chip. The others would’ve mostly either died or never returned, or perhaps some eventually did but were rejected by the Overseer like we are at the end of the game.

In the topic of Fallot, am I the only one who thinks the 3/NV Deathclaw design is superior  to the new version?

I kind of hate how they got rid of that terrifying "skullface" and I think the scales are a downgrade to the almost "flayed" looking skin. The former looks like an abomination that crawled out for your darkest  nightmare, while the other is far more mundane.

 The eyes too.

Come to think of it; I think 4's creature design was a general downgrade. I think the original designs for the creatures in Far harbor and 76 were alot better though

No, I thinks that’s a pretty common sentiment. I certainly agree. Visually, I think New Vegas has the best-looking deathclaws in the series, taking Fallout 3’s already scary "devil" look and diversifying it with lots of different types.

Fallout 4’s look really strong and thick, like they could crash through your brick walls if they wanted, but they don’t have the same "creep factor" as the more slender devilish ones in prior games. They just feel like big dumb animals, not death-bringing monsters of wasteland myth.

I also think it was a lot more frightening in older games when they Usain Bolt sprinted at you with their arms stretched wide, rather than dropping on all fours and bouncing all over the place in random "evasive" patterns that just give you more time to shoot.

They also nerfed them to the point that they're not even scary in FO4.

I can still remember encountering one straight out of the vault at level 4 in Fallout 3. It scared the piss out of me.

Man, Rapture is seriously one-of-a-kind. What an incredible setting.

Underwater is such a cool motif to use; gave alot of ambience and atmosphere you don't normally see. XD

If you encounter one straight out of the vault in Fallout 3 or stumble early into Quarry Junction in NV, it’s basically a death sentence.

In Fallout 4, it’s literally the second thing you’re expected to ever do.

And it comes out of literally nowhere in fucking Concord from a random ass tunnel; like a COD setpiece

The underwater was cool. But the underwater combined with Art Decor and a hint of steampunk is just not even fair to other settings. XD

Death laws in new Vegas were terrifying even at level 50 with desert Ranger armor, the medicine stick, and the Anti-Material rifle. Deathclaws in fallout 4 quit being scary right around level 20 or so. The die is a few hits, and fallout 4’s broken ass health scaling really makes them chumps

For some reason my retarded eight year old self dyslexia'd "Yao'guai" into fucking "Yagga Yugga" like some goddamn Witcher 3 enemy

Hell, I remember being scared at that high school in the village straight out of the vault in FO3. That was an actually scary raider den, as was the Super Duper Mart. I think because there had been little in the way of handholding intro and the atmosphere was just creepy. Those raiders went down in infamy from dying to a teenage girl wearing a Tunnel Snakes jacket and wielding a baseball bat. XD

I might have to read that Bioshock novel, after I'm tired of my Mark Lawrence marathon.

I am currently also reading a lizard porn novel XD called The Last Hour of Gann. It is surprisingly not terrible. Dystopian earth setting- the two grown daughters of a prostitute are left homeless when she dies and they sign on to a space colonization run and end up crash landing on a post-apocalyptic planet populated by alligator humanoids. One of them ends up becoming involved with a badass warlord lizard. It is rather reminiscent of Shepard x Garrus, maybe that's why I enjoy it.

I do like the opening of Fallout 3, though. A pro of spending so long in the vault is that the wasteland makes for a really stark contrast. And they definitely front-load you with some horror by putting that school right out in front as a starter dungeon.

Fallout 3’s intro with James definitely made me feel more inclined to try and find him vs Fallout 4’s 5 second intro like here’s your family *you are supposed to care about them*

Yeah, 4’s starting premise is already shaky, but they went on to pretty much do the bare minimum with it. There’s basically nothing present to try and make you feel invested in your spouse, let alone Shaun. At least we get to see examples of James trying to be a good father, which is generally endearing enough to make most people care.

And I don’t like being forced to be married with a child, but if you’re gonna do it, at least give me some freedom within those parameters. Let me choose my career, or decide what kind of husband I was. This is an RPG, right?
